Ron Slavin opened Cabinet Country in 1976. Originally located in downtown Janesville on River Street, Ron opened shop after seeing a need in the community for kitchen and bath design. When searching for a cabinet line to carry, Ron focused on finding a manufacturer in Wisconsin – and that’s how Holiday Kitchens cabinet line came to a cabinet dealer in Janesville. Cabinet Country remains the only dealer of Holiday Kitchens in the Janesville area.
In 1992 Cabinet Country moved to our current location on Janesville’s north eastern side. This location provided much needed warehouse space and room for delivery trucks. The larger space also allowed for broader displays of not just Holiday Kitchens cabinets but other cabinetry lines. The move also enabled offering a more one-stop shop for home owners. Flooring Unlimited was opened within Cabinet Country’s space showcasing hard and soft flooring materials and decorative tile.
Tessa Slavin Dongarra, Ron’s daughter, grew up with Cabinet Country. She loved going with her father to job sites and seeing the construction that brought new designs to life. Tess departed a bit from the remodel industry in high school and college, but returned in 2004 as a designer for the family business. Many people, including “Red”, a long time driver for Holiday Kitchens, were excited to see the return of the once little girl who welcomed them to the showroom. Tess became President of Cabinet Country in 2014, and continues to design kitchens, baths and other spaces as she operates the company.
Scott Myers came to Cabinet Country in 1991, just two plus years after graduating cum laude with his B.S. in Interior Design from UW-Stout. As well as being a designer, Scott is an exceptional draftsman and a wealth of knowledge about the most intricate details of cabinet construction. We also affectionately refer to him as our “hinge master”.
Becka Freed is the newest designer to Cabinet Country, joining us in 2017. She has a B.F.A. in Interior Design from the Illinois Institute of Art and is an Allied member of ASID. Becka has lived in Palo Alto, CA; Boulder, CO; New York and Chicago and brings with her appreciation of many different styles. She is also passionate about space design and usability, having lived, worked and entertained in her 192 square foot apartment in New York City to great success.
